This order of hemimetabolous neopterans are eusocial. They live in polymorphic caste systems consisting of reproductives, workers and soldiers. All forms are relatively small, with reduced compound eyes and mandibulate mouthparts. Those with wings have very little venation. The hindgut contains symbiotic bacteria that allows for the digestion of wood and other cellulose rich materials; these bacteria are transferred to newly hatched termites via trophallaxis. Termite nests are generally underground, in rotting tres, or large earthen mounds.
