Cockroaches are hemimetabolous, thus they do not undergo complete metamorphosis. They have flattened bodies which range in size from 3 to 65 mm. Their antennae are filiform, compound eyes small, legs long and spiny, and mouthparts mandibulate. Their forewings are sclerotized so as to protect the hindwings. Eggs are laid in an oblong ootheca that is carried externally by the female, although some species are viviparous. Cockroaches are generally nocturnal and carnivorous, often living in human related environments. They may be gregarious or solitary.
